Revenue from generic drug sales once again grew faster than the overall drug market: in the first half of the year, the increase was 14.4% compared to 12.3%, according to IMS Health.
In June, there was a decline compared to the previous month: 3% in units and 5% in revenue.
“Sales vary greatly from month to month, there is a lot of seasonality. At the end of the semester, there was also the impact of the political crisis,” says Telma Salles, president of Progenéricos (industry association).
Even medications for chronic diseases are affected, she says. "People continue to buy them, but in smaller quantities."
In 2016, retail sales of generic drugs grew, but less than the sector as a whole.
Sales in the government segment—which is not analyzed in the survey—were not affected, as was the case with other medicines. “Higher-cost products have suffered more cuts,” says Salles.
